I want a great recipe for cake donuts that are fried?

I want a great recipe for cake donuts that are fried. I went to the county fair last night and bought some that are a traditional fund raiser for a local high school marching band. These were so soft and light.

Mine usually are too crispy. If I lessen the frying time, the insides don't get cooked. Asked by gremhog 52 months ago Similar questions: great recipe cake donuts fried Food & Drink > Cooking.

My grandma's recipe for fried cake donuts I remember my mom making these in the early 60's. The recipe came from her mom. We would stand and watch her fry them in the pan.

This recipe makes about 3 dozen. Cake donuts: Cream: 2 T. Shortening (Mom would have used lard; you could use Crisco or butter, softened) 3/4 c.

Sugar Add: 2 well beaten eggs --Beat well. Blend separately: 3 1/2 c. Flour 1 t.

Salt 1 t. Cinnamon 1/2 t. Nutmeg --Add dry ingredients to wet and stir until smooth.

You may need to knead this a little to get the last of the flour mixed in. Don't over work! --Roll on lightly floured surface to 3/8" thickness.

--Cut with floured donut cutter. --Let stand for about 15 minutes at room temperature, uncovered. --Fry at 375 degrees in 3 c.

Canola/peanut oil or more if needed (the original recipe calls for lard/Crisco) for about 3 minutes, or till golden brown. Turn when necessary. --Drain on paper towels.

--Serve plain, sugared, or spiced. To spice donuts, mix in paper sack and toss donuts: 1/8 c. Sugar 1/4 c.

Cinnamon --enough for 1 dozen To sugar donuts, use in paper bag to toss donuts: 1/2 c. Powdered --enough for 1 dozen --A note about the oil: be sure to let the oil temperature rise back to 375 degrees after each batch. It will drop with each round and if you don't let it get back to temperature, the donuts will be greasy.

Old-Fashioned Doughnuts Found this recipe in an old cookbook. 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup sugar 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp salt 1 egg, beaten 1 Tbsp melter butter About 1-3/4 cups white flour oil for frying Confectioners' or granulated sugar for dusting Mix the milk, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, salt, egg and butter in a large bowl. Add the flour gradually, using just enough so that the dough is firm enough to handle wet, yet as soft as posible.

Cover the dough and chill for about 1 hour. Turn out onto a lightly sloured board and kead for a few minutes. Roll out about 1/2 inch thick.

Cut with a doughnut cutter or sharp knife into 3-inch rounds, cutting out and saving the centers for later frying. Place on a lightly floured piece of was paper and let rest for about five minutes. Fry in 360 degree oil, temperature is crucial, turning when one side is browned and continuing to fry until brown all over.

Drain on paper towels and dust with sugar. I also have a recipe for raised doughnuts, if you'd like it. Sources: Old Fanny Farmer Cookbook .

2 I just read The Doughnut Book by Sally Steinburg whose father invented the first doughnut machine. I think both spellings are acceptable. Actually I always spelled it "doughnut" til recently when brevity worked better with online conversations.

But it was a great read with super recipes, if you are interested.
