I was terminated on 5/10/2011 after 18 1/2 years at the same job. What should I say when applying for new jobs?

I was terminated on 5/10/2011 after 18 1/2 years at the same job. What should I say when applying for new jobs? I have diabetes 2 and was put on 3 different medications at the same time.

During the medication adjustment I failed to give a customer their $40 cash back which made me more than the $30 over/under per week. I was not aware that if I had let my employer know that I would have been protected. What should I do now?

If it was a screw up don't mention it in your resume, and when they ask if they can contact your old employer say no you didn't leave on great terms but here is a list of follow co-workers that can tell you I'm a good worker. Skip the first part if it was company down sizing and no fault of your own,and the company should be more than willing to give you a great letter of recomendation.

I was terminated because of my error but when you are put on 3 medications all at the same time there is an adjustment period where you are not as alert as you normally would be. Momof2youngladies 3 months ago .

With a manager like the one that I had, unfortunately yes. She was retaliating because I had reported her to our HR Dept for religious remarks that she had made. She has quite a history of firing employees that got on her "black list" Any other of the store managers that I had before her would have been more compassionate than she was.

After 18.5 years IMO she is so very wrong to terminate you over $40.00. Unless you have a long history of over/unders , which again IF you had you wouldn't have been there that long. I'd fight it, .

Unfortunately our HR Dept somehow favors management and not the non-management employees. She just transferred to the store that I worked at in Feb 2010 and in May 2010 was when she made the religious remarks that I reported to HR and in June, August and October I had 3 "customer service" write ups (I had not had any in the 17 1/2 years before she came to my store) in June 2010 I had 1 overage and then nothing until I had the $40 overage in the first week of May 2011. The next week I was terminated.

Been there myself. Canned for made-up reasons. You can grumble all you want, but that does no good.

When looking for a new job, do NOT dwell on the negatives, your new potential employer is not interested in how you got screwed-- they're just trying to figure out how good an employee you would be for them. Stress your 17 years as an excellent employee, and just mention in passing how things went downhill with the new manager. Let the new employer draw the obvious connection.Do not lie, if asked, mention the slip-up- I would NOT bring up your medical condition, as they have no need to know that, and it might be enough reason for them to cross you off their list.

And do NOT bring up your reporting issues to HR! That just marks you as a "troublemaker", even if you were 100% justified in doing so. Try to look like the friendliest, most congenial, least troublemaking employee imaginable.

It's an act, for most of us, but that's what they're looking for. So be positive, grumble in private, but smile in public, don't say anything bad about your past employer, just say you seem to have had a conflict with a new manager.

I agree with you 100%. As much as I feel that my termination was unfair, I have not brought any of that into my job search. I guess I am just coming up with the "perfect" answer to why I no longer work there.

There was even one application that wanted me to explain my unemployment and they wanted a reference for that period. I have not received any responses to my applications. I am trying to stay upbeat as difficult as that may be.

I do smile quite a bit. Thanks momof2youngladies 3 months ago .

Tell them you made a mistake or that they had to cut there loses, I dnt praise lying. Everyone makes mistakes and its not like you were sticking it in your pocket so, or just them that you got laid off or were let go like millions of people, just this year. How do you feel about filing for unemployment?

I did file for unemployment. My former employer appealed it but I won the hearing. I have been telling the truth about being terminated.

What are the hottest jobs for people over 50 over the next 10 years.

Injured on the job, terminated after 90 days on workman's compensation, settled with workman's comp, now applying for lo.

What is freedom 18 all about, and what kinds of jobs are there.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
