Because they've failed to develop the necessary interpersonal skills it takes to communicate face-to-face where nonverbal communication plays such an important role. All they know is how to push a button and text crap like "I C U R Gr8 R U? " And that's little more than mindless, meaningless gibberish to people who are skilled in communicating properly - the people who are going to be leading the world of tomorrow while all these texters are still sitting there earning whatever the minimum wage is at the time and wondering what happened, but are content in their ignorance.

Practice doesn't make perfect. Practicing what is perfect makes perfect. As noted, folks no longer practice what is perfect, so we shouldn't be surprised when they don't know how and do it wrong.
