I would like to color my hair a darker shade of blond. What's a good shade to choose? What's the best brand?

Thanks! I've had very light blond hair all my life, born blond. Now that I'm in my 50's I would like to tone it down a little bit.

They say it helps you look younger. The very blond hair has been great, but now I need a change. What's a good darker shade of blond to use?

What brand is best? Thanks again all. Asked by MissJuly 37 months ago Similar questions: color hair darker shade blond choose brand Health.

What I did.......... I went with high and low lights of blond (weave foils, natural) instead of a solid one color. The dept of many colors is really classy. Get it done professionally and tell them that you do not want any brassy blond (orangy....ugly).

The highlights are nice because in the winter time they can add darkness by using more low lights and in the summer they can brighten it up with more highlights. If any white hair comes up it will not be noticed. The salon where I go they were using L'Oreal but recently they changed it and the new colors are beautiful.

Look at people's hair and don't be shy to stop someone, compliment them and ask if they could recommend their beautician. That's the only way to find someone with good references. I made many mistakes doing it on my own because the hair texture acts different with the products.

Maybe it's a little pricey getting it professionally done but you will get professional results. The hair will still have the shine and look well taken care off. Good luck..

It would help if you could post a picture of yourself, showing your hair in it's natural color. Then I could advise you. I'm a stylist by trade, so I might be able to help you.

As for brand, I would say stick with Loreal Preference or Loreal Excellence. Loreal is a good brand but STAY AWAY from Loreal FERIA.It has metallic components that do not leave the hair, ever. Also, it can clash badly with salon color, should you mess up the home color job.

Without knowing your color, I'd say anything in a level 7 should be good. Don't go below a level 6. The numbers appear on the box label.

Also, avoid anything that says ASH. Ash has blue and green in it and can look bad on blondes. Email me with more questions and/or pictures of yourself.

Depends The shade you use depends on whether your hair has a lot of "ash" in it. Ash, I am told, is a greenish cast that shows up in sunlight. I happen to have a lot of ash in my hair.

Like you, I had very light blond hair all my life. Then I began to get gray. It’s the gray that has the ash in it.

You didn’t mention if you are also looking to cover up gray. If you have ash in your gray hair, then get a medium ash blond. Clariol makes Natural Instincts which is excellent. It says on the box it’s semi-permanent (withstands 30 washes) BUT I have used it over a year and wash my hair every day, and I only redo it when my roots begin to be noticeable.

It also has the benefit of not using ammonia, so there’s no harsh chemical smell (no rotten egg smell, no choking feeling). Cost is about $8 to $10, depending on whether you get it at Walmart or the pharmacy. I frequently will get it at the pharmacy or grocery store because that’s when I am reminded that I need a box; and I do not like to shop at Walmart.

Hate the Walmart crowding. If you don’t mind the chemical smell, then I would direct you to L’Oreal Preference. Again go with the Medium Ash Blond (if you are covering up ashy tones).

L’Oreal Preference is a great product, available for about $2.97 or so at Walmart and a little more at the pharmacy and supermarket. You’ll have the stink associated with using it. I used this for 10+ years before deciding to just let my hair be gray.

My gray is actually kind of pretty, but I feel that it ages me beyond my years, so I went back to coloring it, and that’s when I began using the Natural Instincts. If you are not covering up ashy overtones, then go with any medium blond, either Natural Instincts or L’Oreal Preference. The other brands are fine, I’ve tried nearly every other kind, but I always went back to L’Oreal Preference and now, Natural Instincts.

I think they’re the best for the money, convenience in purchasing, consistence in quality, availability, and ease of use. The gloves that are provided with the Natural Instincts are a lot better than the ones that come in the L’Oreal Preference boxes.P.S.: I even considered going darker than blond, to brunette, for fun. However, I have known a few women who colored their hair dark for years who also developed non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

In addition, there have been well-known women who also did the same thing, coloring their hair, and then developed non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Since different agents are used in coloring formulas, and because I know of no such correlation in women who color their hair blond and incidence of developingn non-Hodgkins lymphoma, I ix-nayed the brunette idea and am sticking with blond. I am sure the coloring industry would, and may even have already, develop propaganda saying there's no correlation.

But, those women I knew and the ones I've read about in the newspapers, magazines, etc.(including Jackie Kennedy Onassis) tell me different.

2 AKPhotos, if you check into MissJuly's other questions you'll discover she has cancer. While you might not think that the topic of photography fits the question, I'm sure she has her personal reasons as to why it does--perhaps she needs a photo of herself and wants to look nice for it? She's probably been through a lot.

I can come up with several possible connections that would make these topics applicable. Sometimes if we take a minute to consider other possibilities there is no need for such anger to be aimed at another Askviller.
