I'd like to cover my brick fireplace with tile...do I need to prep it in any way?

Mortar is fine mortar is fine, just make sure that you create a smooth and flat surface, otherwise your tile won't lie flat. If you're planning on doing this yourself and you're nervous about the mortar coming out smooth and flat, you can attach a piece of tile backer board to your existing brick fireplace and then use a thinset mortar to install your tile instead. It would be cheaper and less time consuming to paint your fireplace! If you have never laid tile before it is no easy undertaking, at least the special high resistant morter is premixed the biggest chore is that right thickness of morter is applied and the spacing of the tile is right. If the thickness is wrong or spacing off you will be unsatisfied with the outcome!

Any slight mistake is quickly noticeable to all who sees it! And once set in place extremely hard to change! A normal morter is out of the question because of the properties and special requirements the fire place bricks!

I suggest painting verses tile! With tile you need to ensure the face of the fireplace is clean before you apply high heat morter, after which the heat resistant tile needs to be placed with proper spacing! You will need to purchase a tile cutter for the special areas requiring angles and smaller tile sections!

You will have to keep extra tile for that one accidental crack or chip that may or may not happen, if you at the time decide not to keep extra it will be too late later to find the right match! Painting your fireplace is much easier and an effective eye pleasing, home improvement method! That can be even easier in the future just by repainting and giving it a different look that once again is eye pleasing!
