The ROC nationalist army had 206 generals and 1.5 million soldiers died in the war. Mao's communist red army hid in the mountains and fought only two battles. Communist troops had no general died, and resulted in only 831 Japanese imperial army death throughout the entire war.
Mao's red army turned against nationalist army, during the war, killed/injured 140K nationalist government workers and troops. After the war, in the complete ruin of China, with Soviet Union's full backing, Mao's red army took power in China. Mao then twice openly thanked Japan for invasion of China, so that communists could take power.
As for those nationalist soldiers who fought during WWII, when after communist took power, 243 nationalist generals were executed. More were sent to fight Korean war. Remainders were persecuted during the 30 years non-stop political movements.
They were labeled as "black class". Their families were discriminated against. Now the few who are still alive are in 90s and 100s.
They are asked to go parade for the communist government in the name of "nationalism". To date, PRC China still disallow truth of history to be discussed. They still teach their kid for communist troops defeated Japan.
PRC China is about to release a new movie for Mao attended Cairo conference in 1943 instead of Chiang Kaishek and Madam Chiang. In 2015, PRC government invited Western reps to attend PRC's big show "commemorating defeating of Fascist". Western government, including US, had their ambassadors in Beijing to attend.
People who know the truth don't want to take parts nor endorse for a falsified history propaganda. But Russia's Putin was there because Xi was in Moscow in May for Russian victory parade.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
