No -- you can dump the old java runtime versions. Not uncommon for folks to look and find they have five or six of these old versions of the Java Runtime from Sun, with most all at 100MB or larger. All that you need to keep is the most recent version.

I've heard stories before of some applications being tied to a specific version of the Java runtime, but of the hundreds of computers I support I've yet to ever actually see that be the case in practice. So I think your perfectly safe to dump all the old runtimes. Just go to the Control Panel, then Add/Remove programs, and use the uninstaller for each to get rid of them.

You don't. Java is backward compatible. Simply speaking, Java 6 update 5 is version 1.6 and "J2SE runtime environment 5.0" is version 1.5.Java is supposed to be (and it is in most cases) upward compatible.

Probably not.... J6u5 and J5 are not the same. If you are using J6 and are not having any trouble, then you don't need J5. In the unlikely event you have something that runs in J5 only, then you do need it.In that case, be sure you install J5 in a different directory from J6.
