A bunch of suggestions I’m not sure of your age or other types of books you like, so I’ll give a number of suggestions. First off, I’d recommend Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. It’s another story of a young boy in school.

Instead of fantasy, though, this is sci-fi where the main character is in battle school, being trained to fight an alien invasion. Don’t let the silly sounding premise put you off. It’s a fantastic book.

I’ve recommended it to a ton of people (many of whom don’t regularly read sci-fi) and they all have liked it. There are other books in the series as well. I’d follow it up with Ender’s Shadow (not a sequel, but a retelling of the same story from the point of view of another character.

Wonderfully done). I’d also highly recommend Eragon by Christopher Paolini. It’s the first book in the Inheritance trilogy. It’s quite good, although slightly derivative if you’ve read lots of fantasy in the past.

Who cares, though, it’s a good story. Here’s fair warning, though, only the 1st two books are out, so you’ll be waiting around for the third book if you get hooked. If you’re looking for another fantasy series, perhaps you’d like The Belgariad series by David Eddings.

The first book is Pawn of Prophecy. It tells the story of Garion, a boy who’s world is turned upside-down when he gets dragged along on a mysterious quest with his aunt and grandfather. Very readable.

There are five books in the series, then there are other books and another series set in the same world/same characters. They were enjoyable, but nowhere as good as The Belgariad series. Anne McCaffrey has written extensively in her Pern universe, a place populated by dragons and their dragon riders.

I very much enjoyed her first three books in the setting, the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy. The titles are Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon. To go a little further afield from Harry Potter, I’m going to throw in a recommendation for The Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman. The first collection is titled Preludes and Nocturnes.

These are beautifully drawn, wonderfully written comic books, all featuring (at least obliquely) Morpheus, one of the seven Endless...ideas given form, eternal beings. All of my other suggestions are YA (Young Adult) novels, or if not YA, are still appropriate for younger readers. This is an adult comic book (not adult as in erotic, just adult as in not a child’s story).

The other books I recommended I would give to a middle-schooler. This one, no way. If you like the dark aspects of the Harry Potter series, especially the later books, this might appeal to you.

Once final suggestion is a website. If you’ve never been there before, the name really describes it perfectly. It’s the What Should I Read Next website.

You can go there and type in some books you’ve liked and see what else is suggested for you. I hope some of these appeal to you and you find a new series to get excited about. Everything I recommended was sci-fi or fantasy, since you only mentioned Harry Potter.

But if you’re looking for recommendations in other genres, list some other books/authors you like, either in this discussion board, or post a new question. Happy reading! Terry Pratchett Rowling is very much akin to "Terry Pratchett"-lite. One of my favorite quotes about Pratchett is "Occasionally, he gets accused of literature". He is, simply, the best satirist/humorist writer living or dead of the 20th/21st century.

Most of his books are set in the Discworld - a flat planet that is carried on the back of 4 elephants, who are, in turn, carried on the back of a giant turtle. He has several others, though, that while whimsical, are in a more modern setting. He also has written non-fiction books.67alecto's Recommendations Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch Amazon List Price: $7.99 Used from: $2.73 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 465 reviews) Guards!

These are more or less stand-alone books.

You don't give your age, but here are some you would probably enjoy. I am 25 and still read a range of fiction, including stuff I read when I was 13; I actually ask my cousin who is 13 to recommend books and authors he thinks I will like. If you enjoy fantasy (which as a Harry Potter fan, I am guessing you do), here are some you will enjoy.

I am giving a range of ages they would be appropriate for, because like I said, I don't know how old you are. Two series The Belgariad by David Eddings, starting with Pawn of Prophecy. Or The Earthsea "triligy" by Ursila LeGuin, starting with A Wizard of Earthsea. Both are much less "modern" than the Potter books, but have a similar storyline of young magician grows up and discovers powers.

I have three suggestions for you. You have probably already read some of these, if you are a reader at all, but I love the HP books and love these too: First - The Chronicles of Narnia Second - Artemis Fowl Third - Anything by Roald Dahl - but especially The BFG. I suppose this is the place where I'm supposed to get more coins by inserting widgets, but that seems lame to me..

If that sounds good there's someone you should meet. I'm not quite sure if I should introduce you to the writer or the character first. Jim Butcher writes the most wonderful books about a grown up Wizard in modern day Chicago.

He reminds me of Harry Potter in many ways. The Dresden files follows a few days in the life of one Harry Dresden. A man blessed with the abiltly to perform real magic should have an easy life but for Mr. Dresden this is never the case.

Full of wonderfully realistic imagery amd true to life charcters these books are a wonderful addition to any library that contains Harry Potter. I should mention all of these books are for adults and not children.
