The "home gardening and odd jobs" business can generate a quite respectable income, but make sure you know you're working in a market which can sustain your business.2.

Check for competition, all local businesses in the same field. Also check out the local ads, see what sort of rates and services are being offered. If you find you're competing with established businesses, offer other services and competitive rates.(The good news is you might get the market to yourself.
