Because it makes the food taste yummy and it is virtually addictive. How do you think McDonald's has stayed in business so many years. It is also like the 'free nuts' and even buffets at the bars at happy hour, to get you to eat and drink more.
People also tend not to read food labels, or be aware of the link between sodium/salt, high blood pressure, and stroke. Even if they do read the food labels, they can be misleading. The SERVING size can trick us, so for example, there is one small pizza on the market that looks like it might be a single serving, but in actual fact is THREE.
A large can of tomatoes for pasta sauce, for example, is 14! So if you gave that to your family of 4 one night and you ate the whole thing, just think how much salt they would be consuming. So everyone needs to read the labels!
Look at bread, even cake! Even if you think you never touch a salt shaker, you will be shocked at how much sodium you are getting every day if you eat anything out of a box or can. Good luck!.
I agree I have always though this. I don't understand how the government lets these companies get away with this stuff. SLS in our cleaning products, shampoo, toothpaste etc.I saw show on this stuff and how they clean air plane hanger floors with this and then we put it on our teeth and skin every day.
How is that possible that that would be good or even neutral for you? How do they allow them to put all that salt/sodium into products and then sell it to us? It's killing us as a nation.
Making us overweight and diabetic. It's awful. Why don't consumer ban together to get this changed?
Why don't we care? I so agree! What if anything can we do as individuals?
I have been searching with no results. I have written letters to a few companies to get no response. I feel as they are not looking out for our best interest.
You have to choose just not to buy them....but products like Tom's I think are usually more expensive. I wish we would care more about the products we put into our URL1 many people are sick and it costs so much to treat. I guess buying the expensive products would hopefully ward off some of the later consequences.
Pay now or pay later. ARRRRGGGGHHHHHH .
1 I wish AHA or someone would put a limit for food manufacturers, I battle my sodium intake everyday. I seldom eat processed foods, but when I do, I always try to buy the ones with the lowest sodium in them. I spend more time reading at the grocery store, than I actually do shopping.
I think it's not a big to do, since it seems like most people are watching calories and fat intake, than their sodium intake. These people don't realize that high sodium foods, causes water weight gain. Sodium makes the body hold on to fluid. To pump the added fluid, the heart has to work harder.
I guess they expect the consumer to be educated, read, and proceed at their own risk. I am glad a question like this was put up, maybe a couple of people will see it, and pass it on to others to be aware of.

Casron*~ replied to post #1: 3 Geez...... I also find myself reading more at the stores than shopping. I don't understand that if sodium is connected to many different kinds of sicknesses/diseases, why it would not have a low limit on packaged foods.

Goodbye! Said: 6 HOW do you suggest we restrict sodium in foods? Surely you don't think Big Government should step in and regulate our salt intake?
There's a lot of junk food out there. It's contributing hugely (pun intended) to our obesity pandemic and all the obesity related chronic illnesses. UNLESS we have more government regulation over what the food industry can and cannot do, it will always fall to the consumer to protect himself.
That's done through education, and I gotta tell you, a lot of people wish to remain willfully ignorant.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
