Only fertilized eggs have the potential to hatch. Chances are the hens would be laying a mixed of fertilized and unfertilized eggs.

Yes you can do just that. But then, you may end up having to eat some eggs that are fertilized. There's really nothing wrong with that though.

On the other hand, you may also end up with some eggs that fail to hatch.
