Travel I look at a lot of sites on occasion but the ones I use most are Travelocity (for booking) and TripAdvisor (for hotel information and reviews). Travelocity for two reasons: (a) it works with real web browsers like Firefox. Most of the others won't work properly unless you use IE.(b) it allows you to book flights into one city and a hotel in another.
Most of the others will let you book flights but refuse to show you hotels/rental cars anywhere but the city you are flying into. (I like to fly into Miami and then drive to Key West. ) TripAdvisor has good information on hotels and attractions plus real reviews by real travelers, not just the marketing hype that they post on the net and feed to the booking sites. It is useful to save searches because, very often, I will configure a trip several ways before I make a final decision.
Saved searches are easier to compare later when you are balancing time/money options. What I really need is a site that will let me book an extended trip to multiple places: Hartford to Orlando, stay two days, Orlando to Key West, stay 7 days, Key West to Boston, stay two days. I actually tried to book that trip but none of the travel sites I used would do it.
I finally did it myself manually for each leg. Sources: http://travelocity.com/ http://www.tripadvisor.com/ .
Check this site for air kayak.com compares several airlines at once. You then have to click a link and go to the actual airlines site and enter in the flight info again, but it is a good way to look at several sites at once. I prefer to stick to one airline and get frequent flyer miles towards free flights.
When you fly, always make sure you earn your frequent flyer miles, they do add up. As far as saving searches, if money is not an issue and schedule is more important then save your search. Otherwise, do a new search when you are actually going to purchase.
Prices can change every few hours so you might find a better deal elsewhere. Tickets are priced according to such a randomly seeming system that you never know what prices you will find each time you search. I have found for hotels that I like to search travelocity, expedia, and priceline.
I often get very good deals on priceline for hotels ($85 for a $250 a night room is not unusual), and for air if schedule is no issue.
I usually check three different sites I usually check two general sites, like expedia.com" rel="nofollow">expedia.com and kayak.com" rel="nofollow">kayak.com (it's got a great search with filters that you can turn off - e.g. , if you don't like Delta Airlines, you can uncheck them and they are deleted from the search). When I find a good fare, I then check the company's website, and maybe call them if I had a better price in the past (for hotel).
