I would if I had the option to fight for defense only. I wouldn't go to somebody else's land and kill his people. I wouldn't want to kill at all, but I would do it to defend my country from invaders.
The financial and educational benefits far outweigh the risks involved. You get about two months' worth of paid vacation every year and don't have to pay for your home or utilities. Taxpayers take care of that for you.
You can retire as early as age 38. Taxpayers take care of that too. The bad news is that if you enlist, you are essentially surrendering all of your rights as a US citizen, including freedom of speech.
You can be subjected to non-judicial punishment, which includes punishments of manual labor or loss of pay. This cannot happen in the civilian world without a trial. The military is a card-carrying aristocracy.
Soldiers who enlist can get promoted, but cannot receive a commission. Officers, on the other hand, receive a commission right after college at age 22 and are placed in command of the units of seasoned soldiers. Officers are not subjected to non-judicial punishment unless they voluntarily waive their rights.
They must be saluted since they hold a commission from the president. If you can stomach all of this, being a veteran affords you many opportunities after you resign.
Back in my twenties I tried to join the Navy but was told I would need knee surgery in both knees. They were willing to do this once I joined, but the thought of it made me ill. It was for the best though because I was accepted to law school a few weeks later!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
