Look at the processing times, applying about 3 months before you need the visa would be about right, it might come through immediately or take a few weeks, depending on the nationality of the person. A US person will be fast.

The initial visa will be for 2years and 3 months, to allow time to arrive before achieveing the initial 2 years together before the ILR is applied for. If for some reason, you don't make the full 2 years you still get a few days (90) of grace during which they sit on the application. But if you apply in time, it should not be needed.

So, you're studying for a PhD, but don't understand what the words "present" or "resident" mean. In little words - you can not sponsor someone to come to England if you don't live there yourself.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
