Some good ones I actually just bought a laptop a couple days ago and did a good amount of research looking for similar criteria to yours. I already have a large, powerful desktop computer though, so this was just a second machine for me. I ended up with the MSI Wind which is one of the new sub-notebook size laptops with a 10" screen.

I bought it from Newegg for $350 which is obviously very cheap. Amazon sells them too, and they have the more expensive model that has the larger, longer lasting battery. I went with the MSI Wind because it comes with Windows rather than a variation of Linux which should reduce the headache of me having to install a copy of Windows and be able to use software that I am more familiar with than Linux.

You can also easily hack that machine to add larger hard drives and more RAM if you want. It also has one of the larger keyboards, which is a big complaint for a lot of these small laptops. Because of their small size the keys have to be smaller and a lot of people have trouble typing on them because of the cramped keyboard.

Another one I considered was the Acer Aspire One which is a similar size with similar features. Some of their models have a solid-state hard drive though, which gives you a lot less storage space, but better battery life and more durability because of there being no moving parts in it other than the cooling fan. You can then put in a SD memory card to use as extra storage, but it still won't come close to the 120gb or 160gb that you'll get from a regular spinning hard drive for the same price.

One thing to keep in mind about this new sub-notebook class of laptops is that they really aren't meant to be your main machine for most people. They are good if you already have a bigger, more powerful laptop or desktop machine and are just looking for something small and portable to do simple tasks with. For one thing they don't come with an optical drive so it can be a pain to install software on them since you have to find a way to do it without a CD/DVD drive.

You can purchase external optical drives that plugin to the USB port as well, but that just increases the price as well as bulk of the machine and kind of defeats the purpose of buying such a small, cheap machine. Other limitations are very small screen sizes (usually less than 10") with very low resolutions (usually 1024 x 600) and slow processors. They will be fine for simple tasks like emailing, web browsing, chatting, using Skype to video chat, etc. But if you plan to do anything more strenuous like serious photo editing, video editing, playing games, watching HD videos, etc then the machine really will not be able to handle it.

If this is going to be your only machine I would look at the more expensive "regular" laptops, one with a 14" - 15" screen, optical drive, full power processor, etc. You can still probably find a Windows laptop for well under $1,000 (especially this weekend during Black Friday) that would be more full featured, or get a MacBook starting at $1,000 so you could take advantage of the better operating system, software and reliability of an Apple. I use a Mac for my main desktop machine but just wanted something really small and really cheap to take with me to Iraq, and these small sub-notebook size PC machines fit the bill better than the MacBook for me. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
