I'm looking for a "teacher changes lives of her students" movie, help?

In middle school we watched a movie in class about a teacher who helps her students who are separated by gangs of race get together and be friends. The main character was a girl and someone in her family just died by a shooting... I think.It was a really good movie. Also, the teacher was a white woman.
