I'm trying to determine the value of a hardback copy of Joseph Heller's Catch-22. I don't know how to determine the actual printing date of my copy. The copyright date indicates 1955, 1961.
The dust jacket says he started writing it in 1955 and finished in 1961. There is no printing date indicated. It is Simon and Schuster.
The cover is blue with white lettering on the spine. The cover is in very good condition. The spine shows some minor loosening.
The pages are clean, flat and unmarked. The top edge is a bright pinky red. The dust jacket is in pretty good condition.
Mostly, I am trying to determine the publishing/printing date. Thanks Asked by Sita 52 months ago Similar questions: determine hardback copy Joseph Heller's Catch 22 Arts > Books > Books - Genres.

Catch 22 I usually have pretty good luck getting a good idea of a books value if I can find it on Ebay, and I think I might have found one like yours there: cgi.ebay.com/JOSEPH-HELLERS-CATCH-22-196... ~~ CATCH-22 by Joseph Heller, pub. 1961, Simon & Schuster, New York, A near fine copy in a near fine unclipped book jacket, no marks or writing of any kind, blue cloth boards with a bit of light rubbing along the bottom edges, white titles to the spine, upper edges red,452 pp. W the notation M51 on pg 451, first book club edition.
Dust jacket in Mylar. The printing year is listed as 1961, and they are asking US $115.52reduced from US $154.02for it. Of course, the price doesn't necessarily mean the book is worth that amount... *Poppet*'s Recommendations Catch-22 Amazon List Price: $16.00 Used from: $3.86 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 788 reviews) .
Look for the printing number Unless it is a first edition, first printing, it is not really worth anything as a collectible. Look on the copyright page, near the bottom. It may be marked First Edition.
There should be a series of small numerals which will indicate which print run your copy came from--if the number 1 is on that list, you have a winner. Otherwise, since it is not in perfect condition, it's just a nice old book. Don't get your hopes up even on a first--unless the whole thing is pristine, collectors aren't really interested.

I found a first edition for sale on Ebay and it says the date is 1961 Since it's ebay, there's a picture. Hurry bidding (and picture) end on Sept 9th. With this, you might be able to get more info.
Oh, current bid is $100.00 for this copy. "Item Specifics - Antiquarian/Collectible Books Binding: Hardcover Special Attributes: 1st Edition Category: Literature Printing Year: 1961 Sub-Category: Fiction Classics" Sources: cgi.ebay.com/1961-Catch-22-1st-Edition-J... .
1 Jacki14, regarding your answer "look for the printing number": Thank you for your response! I did check for those numbers. They do not appear on this copy.
Other than the copyright info there is only a Library of Congress number on that page where the printing/publishing numbers would usually be. I heard somewhere that older books might not include that info. Anyway, I appreciate your response.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
