Liszt became an Abbe in the Franciscan order in 1865 Liszt became an Abbe in the Franciscan order in 1865. There are several minor orders under the three Holy orders of Deacon, Priest and Bishop (cardinals and the Pope are really higher-ranking Bishops. ) Wikipedia lists the minor orders as porter, exorcist, lector and acolyte.

I was surprised to see exorcist listed here as, of course, all my knowledge of exorcism comes form the movie, and the exorcist was a priest in the film. Abbe does not appear in this list, but that was what Liszt was called at the end of his life. Liszt led a fairly scandalous life, at least by nineteenth century standards, but by 1865 he was 54, and was perhaps slowing down a bit (I’m 62, and haven’t slowed down THAT much.) The minor orders did not require celibacy, so these persons could marry, and, presumably scandalous behavior would be not as bad as for a deacon or priest.

I have observed enough paradoxical behavior in my fellow humans to see nothing surprising in Liszt’s combining religious devotion with fleshly pursuits. Sources: http://www.classicalarchives.com/bios/liszt_bio.html ; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_orders .

Liszt had a late conversion (I think his goal in life was to sample everything) but there's a little-known composer called Padre Antonio Soler - Spanish - who wrote the most amazing keyboard music: he seems to have been a 'sport,' as gardeners would say, having not much by way of predecessors or descendants. S music is a little like Scarlatti - he was writing at roughly the same time - but much more daring, cheerful, and challenging. Well worth looking for if you're interested in music as well as riddles, but thanks for the riddles.

Franz Liszt I'm sure many composers over the years acquired minor orders, some were even priests. However, the most famous, or notorious, is Franz Liszt. This is because his early life was full of romances and illegitimate children, so that the turn towards religious life was surprising.

Also, he was a very famous composer and pianist, so this made tabloid headlines, so to speak. Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Liszt#Liszt_... .

1 Two very great Holy Orders composers: Guillaume de Machault (Paris, 1300's) and Antonio Vivaldi, the Red Priest (Venice, 1700's) Vivaldi apparently had fiery red hair.

2 If I'm not mistaken, Franz Liszt was greatly drawn to the religious life. Again, if I'm not mistaken, he was in and out of monastaries; but never took final vows. Much of his music has deep, if not religious, spiritual or "mystical" overtones to it.

Love his "Les Preludes".

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
