You're not suing your parents, your filing a claim against their homeowners insurance. There is a difference. If your mom backed into your car and her car was fine but your car needed a new hood, would you not file a claim with the insurance company?
Of course you would... This is WHY we, responsible grown ups (like yourself and your parents), HAVE insurance and pay those companies a large sum of money throughout our lifetime.... Just in case. This is the "just in case" that your parents were paying that insurance for... Nothing to feel guilty about. Also, my American Bulldog bit my sons face when he was 2... The dog was the sweetest baby boy dog you could imagine, and his aggression was so out of character... We took him to the vet and found out he had a brain tumor... inoperable and terminal.
There may be an underlying medical condition that caused the dog to be aggressive..
Very sadly I think there is a very good chance that the 3yr old German Shepherd may have developed an mental illness. It is very common for this breed of dog to develop dementia (early in life) and Alzheimers disease. If this dog has never shown aggression before, then I would be extremely concerned and suggest your parents take him to the vet asap to discuss the matter further.
Talk it over with your insurance salesman, get advice on how insurance will work and how it could help both in the near and far future. Suing your parents doesn't need to be messy, but it can get messy real fast if there is any misscommunication. So be very careful to be open, honest, calm (i know it seems impossible right now), respectful and approachable.
Keeping detailed records will help too. Additionally I think it would be a very good idea for you and your partner and your parents to seek joint counselling. Just so you all have a safe place for guided, helpful conversations were you can all deal with this ordeal together with support and love.
It will help strengthen your relationships and avoid underlying resentments that could fester up over time without you even knowing it.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
