They are used as energy source for a lot of cellular processes in the form of polyphosphate nucleotides (and especially adenosine triphosphate ATP). The energy comes from the release of the last or the two last phosphates of the molecule Careful though, they are *intracellular* energy sources. At the scale of an entire organism, "energy sources" are carbs, proteins and lipids.
These molecules are further processed and converted in ATP (eg) Proteins and sugars; nucleic acids as well as lipids fats (from animals) and oils (from plants): all of them possess structural functions and, as well, they can all be used as fuel.
