Is accupuncture supposed to be sooooo painful?

I had a couple of accupuncture sessions by a doctor who said he had 7 years of experience. The treatments were for promoting general well-being. I was holding my breath and screaming in pain during the treatment.

He told me it's supposed to hurt until the needle is properly in place. I bled through the point on my foot. He said this was good because it let the bad blood out.

Isn't it supposed to relax you? I was totally strung out with pain. This was my first experience with accupuncture and thus far my last.

Not always! I hate too painful acupuncture! Chinese acupuncture uses thick needles and the chinese like to vigurously stimulate the "chi" points.

For them is good if you hurt, it’s sort of a proof that what they do to you works. This technique has its followers, but I am certainly NOT among them! I used to go and have japanese acupuncture for my strong migraines and the sessions helped a lot, stopping my migraines completely for a year and half (after about 20 sessions, using low-intensity current on the needles).

Japanese needles are much thiner and the japanese acupuncture is less invasive than the chinese one. Six months ago I discovered another technique named "meridian" (I went to a japanese practitioner) which uses equally very thin needles but they are not implanted deeper in the "chi" points, only extremely superficially, so that you do not feel anything, but really, absolutely anything! It’s like the practitioner is only brushing gently his/her fingertips over your skin.

After an hour treatment I was so relaxed that I was half asleep! I myself hate pain and I consider that if during the acupuncture session I hurt or stress instead of relaxing, I am far better without it! This gentle method had very good results too on my headaches, so I am the proof that the acupuncture doesn’t have to heart in order to work!

It should be a pitty for you to give up on this non-invasive alternative medicine and its benefits, only because you didn’t find yet the technique which suits you best! Next time when you call for making an appointment, ask more details about the technique the practitioner uses and ask him or her if his/her technique causes any pain, like this you know what you can expect. And avoid the chinese acupuncture which is always painful!

Try to find a person who is trained in japanese acupuncture. Good luck! Sources: meridianacupuncture.com/page_about.html .

No pain I have to say I have had acupuncture at least 20 times in the last year and I have not had any pain except for a small initial pinch. I,ve had 7 needles in my forehead,in my ear lobes, in my fingers and toes and I have had no pain, so I would have to say this acupucturist is doing it wrong or using the wrong size needles or just does not know what he is doing. Why not try another acupuncturist or try a school where the students do on the job training.

This is also the cheapest way.

I didn't mind it at all I had maybe 25 or 30 acupuncture treatments, all from the same man (a family friend), and they didn't bother me at all. The insertion of the needles felt like pin pricks. While they were in, I felt maybe a mild ache (at worst), maybe a small sharp pain if I moved when I shouldn't have.In other words, all was fine!

And I certaily didn't bleed. If I were you, I'd go elsewhere for another try. Maybe get a referral, if you know someone else who has had better luck than you've had.

Please don't tar all acupuncturists with the brush of one bad apple (love them mixed metaphors! ). Good luck-- Pam_I_Am's Recommendations The Pictorial Atlas of Acupuncture Used from: $25.54 Maybe your guy needed to follow someone' diagrams--?

That doesn't sound right at all! My husband was going to an acupuncturist quite regularly for low back pain and knee pain. I went to a couple of sessions with him, and there was never any pain when the needles were being placed (NOT shoved in like it sounds happened to you!) There was never any bleeding, either.

It was SO relaxing that he ended up falling asleep and snoring. I asked the acupuncturist if he could do anything about THAT and he laughed. It did work for the back pain. I think it sounds like the guy you went to had 7 DAYS of experience.

Maybe you should try another session with another acupuncturist, and if that doesn’t work and it is still painful, it might not be for you. Some other family members of mine have also gone to acupuncturists and they never once mentioned anything like what you described. I’m sorry that your experience was so bad.

Here’s a thought - seeing that it was to promote general well being, maybe you were in perfect health at that point and didn’t need the acupuncture, and that is why it hurt!? Sources: my life .

My husband had the same experience as you. Acupuncture was recommended to him by a doctor (I don't remember what it was for - many years ago) and he had a horrible time with the pain. The acupuncturist kept saying, "this won't hurt" or "this isn't supposed to hurt" and my husband was in terrible pain from each needle.

He hated it, it didn't cure whatever it was supposed to cure, and he didn't go back. He shuddered each time acupuncture was mentioned after that. You said he said "...let the bad blood out"?

There isn't such a thing as "bad blood! " If you want to promote your general well-being, perhaps a spa would be more relaxing! Sources: my experience .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
