This reduces water loss because the outer waxy coating on leaves slows transpiration; many coastal plants have a thick glossy coating on the leaves, reducing water loss, because this is one of the main area's water is lost through because the aloe Vera has this feature it is adapted to a an environment with little water; which means it is classed as an xerophyte.
