Is getting a prenuptial agreement a bad sign for a marriage?

I think the best idea for bringing up a prenuptial agreement is to discuss it before you even ask your significant other for their hand in marriage. This will avoid all conflicts in the planning of the wedding because you will both know where you stand on this issue beforehand. Prenuptial agreements are important when one or both parties feel the need to safeguard whatever property, monies, etc. they possess prior to the marriage and when their earning potential far surpasses their mates, to also safeguard future earnings, should the marriage not work out.

Many feel offended when the subject is introduced, however, with the number of divorces it is important to protect ones’ interests, especially if you have children from a previous relationship. It is important to stress this is being done in fairness to each of you. Also, you should have an open discussion about this to understand exactly what your partners’ fears or concerns are in signing the agreement.

Some feel that signing a prenuptial agreement is dooming your relationship to failure, but it is actually quite the opposite, you are strengthening your relationship by ridding yourself of any concerns before you actually commit to one another. If your fiancé refuses to sign the agreement, then the ball is truly in your court, you can either make some corrections that would make your fiancé more comfortable in signing it or you can choose not to be married if this is a deal-breaker. Perhaps request that your fiancé have a lawyer look at the agreement to assure its fairness.
