More on that further down .... but first, let me consider your question on whether a desire to teach the cat to swim is necessarily a cruel thing for it's owner to want to do.... I watched the video, and noticed it began with giving the location of the school as "Amsterdam, city of cats and canals. " And so if someone lived there and let their cat wander about outdoors, it actually could be a safety precaution in the mind of the owner, to make sure the cat would not drown if it ended up falling or getting dropped my some mean person into the canal. Beyond that, I don't see any positive reason to toss a cat into the water for swimming lessons when it doesn't want to go there.
The first thing I thought of when I saw your question: the Turkish Van breed of cats, who are naturally inclined to enjoy swimming. I think it's interesting to note that these cats don't need to be taught to swim--they just take to the water and do it. From an informative article on the breed: "The Noah's Ark theory aside, a full explanation for the Turkish Van's predilection for swimming has yet to emerge, but the leading hypothesis suggests that the early Vans were simply trying to stay cool.
That region of Turkey is renowned for its brutal heat, with temperatures reaching well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so the cats may have learned to swim simply so they could survive the summer afternoons. " (See source list for full article link). See video below about a woman who encourages her cat to swim ... she poses the theory that all cats are naturally able to swim if they have need to do so.
Well, that's kinda mean, but I suppose the cats were basically unharmed. Most cats know how to swim but they prefer not to!
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
