In the Christian context, the term ecumenism simply means unity or oneness of people. As people, we are one, irrespective of our colour. We were all created by the same God, who is the source of our unity and solidarity.
The world-wide ecumenical movement, therefore, strives to unite professing Christians of all denominations and beliefs. It is an organised attempt to bring about co-operation and unity of all Christians. What is the background of the movement?
The ecumenical movement was started a century ago by Anglican, Protestant and Orthodox Christians, who convened in Edinburgh, Scotland, to respond to the challenges of disunity and its impact on the evangelistic mission of the Church. Jesus started one Church, entrusted it to the Apostles and chose Peter to be its leader (Matthew 16:13-20). It was Jesus' desire that his Church be united, in order to be credible.
