Is it safe to put a 4 drawer metal filing cabinet on the second floor of a house, approx full weight 200kg I want to put a 4 drawer metal filing cabinet in a bedroom on the second floor of my house. Fully loaded it should weigh around 200 kgs. I have no idea what the joists are like as all the rooms have fitted carpets.
I just want to know if it's safe to do, or a no-no. Asked by newuser10277893 43 months ago Similar questions: safe put drawer metal filing cabinet floor house approx full weight 200kg Home.

I have a 4-drawer metal file cabinet in the second floor officeof my house. Why wouldn't it be safe? .
We have put 4 drawer, metal, legal size file cabinets loaded with papers on 2nd floor of several houses - no problem! We have never had a problem with putting metal, 4 drawer legal file cabinets, which were filled with papers, etc. In bedroom closets on the 2nd floor of homes where we were living. We never knew if the construction of the house would take it, but I never worried about it.
We put several pieces of heavy furniture up-stairs, including exercise equipment, in many houses with no difficulty. It is a good idea to put an extra piece of carpeting or something like that under the file cabinet. I would also get those things like "Magic Sliders" and put them under it so when you want to move it you can move it easily.
I started out buying the expensive ones, "Magic Sliders" and they work fine, as long as they are the large ones. If you use anything smaller than 3" you have a problem - even though they say you can move just about anything. You can move just about anything, as long as you use the large ones.
Next, I bought 2 other brands, still too expensive, since I want to put them under just about everything I can in our new house and leave them. The other two brands were ok. Next I saw an ad in the Harriet Carter catalog - one of those little junk catalogs you get a million times a year.
Their’s are called "Moving Men" and you get a set of 8 - four 7" diameter and four 3 1/2" diameter & cost $ $9.98 regularly but they are on sale 2 sets for $14.98. (Harriet Carter.com - Item # E-1430). I tested these & they work just as well as Magic Sliders and cost a lot less.
I have never seen any in these sizes as reasonably priced. I may change my mind about putting them under everything in the house - I may just put them where they can’t be seen - but they are a God-send for older people. Sources: Life and "Harriet Carter.com" .
2 assuming your house was deliberately built with a second floor, rather than someone putting decking and sheetrock in an attic, then the floor should have adequate strength to support a filing cabinet filled with any variety of paper product. The second floor is built to the same standards as the first. If you were planing to line up an entire wall with heavy filing cabinets, I would recommend caution, but your floor will have been designed to carry one or two overweight loads in a room.(meaning furniture, not making any sort of reference to people; who I have never seen and have no right to judge anyway) .

3 I am a records management consultant for Info Pro, Inc. I've been installing filing systems for 20 + years and I work with structural engineers on a regular basis as relating to these concerns. I can pretty well guarantee you that you'll have no problems.
The key is to know how much weight the floor is rated to tolerate. Hard copy letter files weigh approximately 2 lbs. Per lineal inch, and the weight of a loaded 4 drawer cabinet is approximatly 435 lbs.
Hope this helps.

Jazmyne replied to post #3: 4 I have a file room ( approximately 18' x 12') in an office building that is rated for approximately 100 lbs. Per square foot. The building is on a 4 foot crawlspace.
Our inital thought was to do a high-density file system however floor loading will not allow this. Second thought was to use standard four drawer files that we already own. We wanted to house at least 35 four drawer cabinets in this room.
Without seeing the room can you tell if this might be feasible with this floor rating? .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
