Doug White of Archibald, La. , was the hero of the day Sunday when he landed a twin-engine Beech aircraft at Southwest Florida International Airport after the pilot passed out. White, who was flying home with his family, took over the plane and with the help of air traffic controllers landed at the Lee County airport without incident.

The plane had left Marco Island on Sunday afternoon and was at about 10,000 feet when pilot Joe Cabuk was stricken. Kathleen Bergen, a spokewoman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said White was sitting in the right seat of the plane when Cabuk lost consciousness. “He had experience as a single-engine pilot,” Bergen said.
