Similar questions: true drinking cold water makes fat drink room temperature.
Haven't heard that before... I've heard the drinking really cold water will increase your metabolism, but not quench your thirst. Drinking room temperature water will quench your thirst. Haven't heard anything about dinking cold water will make you fat..
No If anything, cold water should make you burn more calories in order to raise your body temperature, but even that is not enough to be concerned about.
No No, it is not true that the temperature of water will affect your weight. Your friends needs a new nutritionist. Keep in mind that nutrition is a complex issue and we are learning about it constantly.
Unfortunately it is very easy to become a nutritionist and just because someone calls them self an expert that does not mean that they are. If you read up on the latest findings and studies you will find that much of what we thought was good in the past is not, and certainly some of what we think is healthy today we may find out not to be true tomorrow. We were told in the 60's that formula is better than breast milk.
Now we know how very wrong that it. We were told that eggs were too high in cholesterol and now we know that they are very healthy and full of good cholesterol, which years ago we did not know existed. Fat is not all bad like it used to be, salt is necessary and not evil (always, depending on your ability to deal with it).
The problem is that often research is based on earlier research and often the foundations of our understanding is faulty. When scientist go back to the basics they often find new information that invalidates common concepts that we grew up with. I have heard theories in the past about not drinking during dinner so that you don't water down the stomach acids needed for digestion, and we know that the temperature of foods change the chemical makeup (releasing nutrients and/or destroying nutrients).
However, I think a blanket statement that cold water makes you fat is just too silly. There are great books on real nutrition that you can find (just as there are bad ones). You must educate yourself and not believe everything you read and hear.

Somebody needs a new nutritionist Water, all water, has exactly zero calories. If anything, cold water burns a few calories, since it takes heat from your body which your body must replace. These guys calculated it comes to around 17 calories for a liter of ice water, which really isn't very much, but it's certainly the opposite of making you fat.
That nutritionist probably figured the cold slows down your metabolism, but that's exactly wrong. Sounds like your friend should get a new nutritionist; heaven only knows what other bogus advice they're dispensing.
Unlikely It sounds unlikely... all water, whether cold, room temperature, or lukewarm, is heated to a toasty 98.6 degrees F within a minute or two of being consumed.
