To call your self a gamer you have to know what kind of gamer you are! Casual don't care about stats just wanna have fun. Competitive want to win and feel like your better then everyone.
Esports play for the win but play it like a sport with Practice and talking of strategy and talking of improving game. You have to find your classification. I am a esports gamer.

A person who plays games is just that. A gamer is someone who wasted so much of their time in the back ground that they can't use their skill of modding or hacking outside of gaming. So they thus identify as a gamer.

Everyone else who uses the phrase is just using it because they are describing something unofficial they think they understand. You basically need to have a commitment around games that alters your life and forces you to be involved in one game for a year or longer. Beyond the normal point.
