Port is not a cooking wine per se. It is a fine dessert wine, that can be used to cook with. The distinction is important.
Cooking wine is generally inferior quality and contains salt. Port properly comes from Portugal, although port-style versions come from wine growing regions (US, S. Africa, Australia, Canada etc.).
It usually has some sweetness, ranging from semi to very sweet. It is generally also a red wine although white ports are also known. Importantly for you, it is a fortified wine, meaning alcohol has been added such that it has 16-20% alcohol.
This means that you can buy a bottle now, open it, and it will be fine next year when you cook this recipe again (provided you stick the cork back in! ) Sources: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_wine .
Not strictly Port can be used for cooking or drinking, with a nice, expensive port being a great gourmet experience! I recently used an inexpensive port to make a glaze for roast duck. Port should keep OK in the refrigerator for a few months (I'm willing to go six with it), and would probably be OK for a year if frozen in an ice cube tray, then stored in about three ziplock bags (to avoid picking up flavors from the freezer).
You don't provide any details on the salad, so I can't say what wine you'll need. If it's a green salad, what you likely need is a good quality red wine vinegar, and not port.
Port wine Port wine in itself is a Dessert drinking wine or after dinner wine, it is also used in cooking ( port wine sauces ) or ( Pears poached in Port wine ) just to name a few items. Port wine if left alone in a cubbard and not out in the light will keep for a few months, like any wine after time it will start to break down and turn, best thing to do is get the cheap port wine for the cooking and the good stuff for the drinking... 1 Addition to my answer: which one you choose will depend on how sweet the final product should be. Ruby is the most popular and easily accessible. You might consult with your wine-seller.
You may also be able to buy it in a half bottle.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
