Is riding a stationary bike safe for arthritic knees?

One knee is fine, the other is not. When I ride, however gently, I feel pain in the bad knee. Isn't exercise supposed to be good for arthritis?

Rule out damage and pedal on I think exerise is good for arthritus but if it is so advanced that you have bone on bone contact in the joint or some kind of impingment or loose material in the joint I think you could cause some damage. If it were me I would get a med pro to give me a clear picture of what is happening in the knee (and MRI) to rule out damage. If that can be done then the pain may be something you can work through. In my mind though pain is generally a indicator of damage but I have some athritis and I know better now.

I would start with low resitance and build slowly on a recumbant bike... none of this hard pushing (or standing) stuff that could cause a bone 2 bone impact.

My problem exactly..... I had a left foot surgery and I cannot walk for extended periods of time. Being inactive for a long time caused a problem on my right knee. So..... I thought if I walk 10 minutes slow on my treadmill and do 10 minutes on the stationary bike should be OK.It had been suggested to first grab a heating pad and place it on the knees for 10 minutes to increase the flexibility.

Did that! After the 10 minutes went on the bike, 10 minutes and then a cold compress on the knee. Oh boy what a change.

I felt that my knees were working again and on the third day a wrong step my knee was out of whack. I went to the chiropractor that told me that IF SOMETHING HURTS YOU HAVE AN INJURY! Why would you exercise an injured part of the body, he asked me?

Exercising in bed, gently before getting up, moving every part of your body to start up circulation. He told me to lay in bed on my back, no pillows, and do "air biking" just with the legs in the air.No weight, no tension etc. Swimming is also recommended. Maybe a consultation with a physical therapist to determine the level of exercises that will be good for you would be in order..

2 Sell your bike. Any use on that joint makes the damage worse. Use the money from the bike to join a gym that has a heated pool so you can do water walking.

I think you asked about this kind of thing before regarding walking, right? Same advice. Also, if you have osteo arthritis in one knee and have not traumatized it in the past (which might have triggered the arthritis), then you probably have it in both knees and your other knee doesn't need the wear and tear either.

3 Tuppence may have it... if there is truly some kind of impingement, bone-2-bone contact, or some bone chips, cartliage or what not in the joint you can tear up your knee. You need some medical imaging to tell you what is going on inside you.

" "Is walking OK for someone with arthritic knees: will it make the cartlidge dissipate faster?" "Stationary exercise bike, recommendations" "Can I do yoga with really arthritic knees>" "what is the best position for riding a bike.

What is the best position for riding a bike.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
