While I understand the frustration of anyone whose country will end up footing the bill, the point is that the right time to have put the proper measures in place was before allowing Greece into the EU. Now that it is part of the EU, the question is not - should other EU nations bail out Greece, but rather - is the EU serious about becoming a unified block similar to the US? If the answer is no, then perhaps the EU has proven to be a failed political-economic experiment and it is time to call it a day and move on.In such a scenario, Greece will have to fend for itself, though to be fair, the IMF should lend it the money needed to extract itself from the current crisis in a similar manner (and with similar conditions) as it helps third world countries.
Among other things (besides fairness) this will reduce the risk of a domino effect, with other world economies collapsing. If (as I think would be the wiser alternative) the EU decides it is really here to stay, then this question would be similar to "should the US federal government help the state of California avoid bankruptcy?" - to which the answer is yes, but within the limits of what the law allows. In addition, austerity measures are needed in any case where mismanagement has resulted in economic problems.
If the citizens are unwilling to accept austerity, then the aid should be limited to an absolute minimum. If this is explained publicly and clearly, that other EU citizens do not owe to the EU citizens of Greece to fund any mismanagement and wasteful government spending (by the Greek government) I believe this would go a long way to calm down Greek anger. However, the austerity measures should take into account who is more able to cut their standard of living and who is less so, and make cuts based on that, and not on political clout.
I know this is naive, but it is the just thing, and the thing more likely to be accepted by the public there.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
