Is the Facebook Phonebook a Security Threat?

I would think that it could be dangerous to have a phone number on Facebook, even if the user has an account that is used for business purposes. Posting your address and full name can be a problem too, since any information about anyone can be obtained on the internet. One can search switchboard.com or whitepages.com and get phone numbers or addresses of anyone that has a listed number, unless it is a cell phone number, which isn't listed.

I would suggest to put as little personal information as possible on a Facebook account. If someone is interested in the business, he or she can contact your friend through email and then she can deal with that person on an individual basis and give out any infromation she deems appropriate.

There was a status update going viral around Facebook at the end of June, beginning of July that may be the same thing your friend got. It looked like this --- quote --- *WARNING**Go to the top right of your screen, click Account & then click Edit Friends. Go to the left side of your screen and click Phonebook.

Everyone’s phone # is being published. Please repost to let your friends know of this change in security, so that they can remove their phone numbers or change their privacy settings… --- / quote --- allfacebook.com/2010/06/facebook-phonebo... I personally don't care if my phone number is published or not, as I have had a published number for my entire life. I especially wouldn't care if I had a Business phone number that was published, isn't that, after all, why you have a business phone number?

To publish it so people can call? However, she can hide her phone number through her security settings if that is all that is bothering her about Facebook at present. Problem is, more and more of these "warnings" are popping up on Facebook all the time, it seems, and your friends comfort level may not be up to the constant "red alert" status.Me?

I just ignore most of it. If Facebook's overall bad publicity (some of it deserved) in the area security is bothering your friend, it might be the right time for her to discontinue doing business on Facebook. There are plenty of other homes for business on the net, and many without the bad security rap.

No it isn't a security threat. You're thinking about this from a "why would I want to give a stranger my number" angle. Many businesses and famous millionaires have their mobile numbers exposed to the public, and nothing ever happens to them that's dangerous or creepy.

Having your mobile number on facebook is useful if your friends lose your number, or if they're on their phone browsing the internet, or are at an internet cafe, and they desperately need your number because they've lost you somewhere and want to find you. The names, addresses and phone numbers of people who own domain names are stored in the WHOIS database and nobody thinks that's a security threat. Check it out at whois.sc Most of my facebook friends which is 200 share their mobile numbers on facebook and nothing happens to them.

There are a lot of things on your Facebook page that can be a threat including the Phonebook if you don't set your privacy settings correctly. You can customize all of your settings and manually list the individuals you wish to see your information. In my opinion the best option is to remove private information (hometown, address, birthday, phone number, children's birthday's, children's school name, etc.) to prevent any one from viewing those items.

You can remove your phone number, email and other information and just leave that information blank on your page. I only allow my family and friends to view my information, and I do not "friend" anyone that I do not know. But, if you think about it your personal name, address and home phone number are in print for everyone if it is not unlisted.

You can also do a search on whitepages.com and find your information there. I have assisted in locating individuals via the internet for reunions & for couriers to deliver subpoenas. I have chosen to remove my information from that site.

Yes, it can be a security threat. If your account gets hack, or your friends, they will have your number. I think the need number pages are worse because often times the contents are opened to the public.

If your really concerned right now, search your number on Mahalo, google, or yahoo and see if it pops up. I found my number out there on an old friend's page for when he got a new phone. I just went back and deleted it.

I recommend in general not to post your number online.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
