Is the "hobo" a cultural icon in America? I was thinking of Red Skelton's famous hobo character and Emmett Kelly's "Weary Willie" based on the hobos of the Depression Era. Not as much as the Cowboy... ..and not as much at he used to be, but the Hobo is still an icon. I still see references, halloween costumes, etc. The image of the "bindle" or cloth bag on a stick is still around, at least among people of my generation (30s). And I see new stuff all of the time.

I suppose they are. I think we tend to romanticize the hobo lifestyle because it reminds us of a simpler time in America. Not that the Depression wasn't a hardship, just that people were more trusting. A hobo could ride the rails, stop in a town and work for some food or change and then move on.

Today we worry that they are pedophiles or some other type criminal. If they seem harmless enough, we worry about liability claims or INS if we give them work. It's just another example of something that has slipped into our past with little possibility of being revived.63swc's Recommendations On Hobos and Homelessness (Heritage of Sociology Series) Amazon List Price: $22.00 Used from: $14.97 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 2 reviews) Red Skelton Amazon List Price: $17.98 Emmett Kelly, Jr.: Travels Through American story With the World's Most Famous Hobo Clown Amazon List Price: $35.00 Used from: $18.48 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 1 reviews) .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
