Not as much as the Cowboy... ..and not as much at he used to be, but the Hobo is still an icon. I still see references, halloween costumes, etc. The image of the "bindle" or cloth bag on a stick is still around, at least among people of my generation (30s). And I see new stuff all of the time.

I suppose they are. I think we tend to romanticize the hobo lifestyle because it reminds us of a simpler time in America. Not that the Depression wasn't a hardship, just that people were more trusting. A hobo could ride the rails, stop in a town and work for some food or change and then move on.

Today we worry that they are pedophiles or some other type criminal. If they seem harmless enough, we worry about liability claims or INS if we give them work.
