Is the new voting system proposed on Askville too confusing or unfair?

I think that it's both confusing and unfair. I do hope that the time alotted to answering the question is the same, or maybe even minimized since everyone can answer. I'm starting to think that the best thing could be to have the asker be the only one to rate the answers, being that they are the ones who posted the question.

Yes, it's confusing Heck, alot of people find the current system confusing, and some find it unfair, too! But it does seem like they are trying to make it even MORE confusing...I'm guessing we are dealing with some really smart people behind the scenes here, you know, Mr. Mayor and friends. They are used to thinking in algorithms and in complicated computer language--but we aren't.

I wouldn't know an algorithm if it bit me! I'm not saying it needs to be "dumbed down", but I would fully support simplification! Easy enough for a first time visitor to participate in and fully understand.

I really think the way it's being done now is pretty fair and efficient. I don't want to throw in more raters into the mix. The askers rating has more weight already, and that seems to work pretty well in most cases.

And we do learn, through experience, or should learn, what kinds of questions/askers to avoid. In the new way, though, I don't think they are proposing that everyone can answer--only that everyone can rate the answers. So, the problem with that is say I don't bother to answer a Q about sushi, for instance, but if I don't like you I might come and rate your answer low just because I don't like you and I can.(not really YOU, Sakura--just an example!).

Then I could find all your other answers and rate them low, too! They say that it won't effect our scores, as if you aren't a high enough level in the topic your numerical influence will be low, but if there is a number count of votes, like there are with the thumbs, it will cause bad feelings, no matter what the numbers might say. Plus it will be more "blind" voting, where we won't have the numbers to understand why we got our final tally.

So anyway, I am in favor of keeping the rating system the same, with maybe a few minor changes. It seems way too complicated to add these new twists. *Poppet*'s Recommendations Land of Confusion Amazon List Price: $9.49 Used from: $4.75 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 2 reviews) .

If it's not as you suggested (that the asker be the only one to rate the answers) IMHO it's probably just as confusing AND unfair as the old voting system.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
