Yes, the otterhound is becoming extinct. There are said to be only an estimated 1,000 or so Ottherhounds worldwide and somewhere between 350 and 400 in the US. In the early 20th century when otter hunting was a popular sport, Otterhound were not numerous.
They are considered as the most endangered dog breed in Britain since there were only 51 born there in 2006. They are included in the list of Vulnerable Native Breeds as identified by the UK Kennel Club. And there are many organizations that created to save this breed.
Otterhound fanciers are against breeding of the dog for shows and so it is not very popular as a pet or show dog.
