I would consider violence acceptable during self-defense, as becomes necessary when one is attacked or otherwise physically threatened by another individual. Although I would try to use violence or even the infliction of injury upon another person as the absolute last resort, I could not (if there were any way I could prevent it) let an attacker try to injure or even kill me or another person (either from my family, circle of friends, or a random stranger in a disadvantaged position, such as a young child, an ill person, or an elderly individual). I have grown up to learn that violence sparks nothing but more violence and that the use of physical force is actually a pretty primitive way to try and resolve a problem.
I was taught that using verbal skills can oftentimes help resolve a conflict much more effectively. However, I don’t think that a person holding a knife to my throat would want to talk much, even though there may be skilled negotiators out there who could weasel themselves even out of this situation. But I am certainly not one of them.In this case, it would certainly be appropriate to use any force of physical self-defense that is still possible to help save your own life.
However, it is never acceptable to be the initiator of violence in order to achieve a personal goal in life.
I would also say self defense is a reasonable act, however let some jerk come in my home (single mom) and threaten my way of life and my children or grandchildren he/she is going to get a world of hurt by me. I think that is acceptable as well. I am a mellow person but I would give violence to anyone who threatens to try take the life of my offspring or grand babies if they are here.
I don't think of self defense as violence...its just a means to survival and most people will do anything to survive. However, I really admire the people who have demonstrated the power of passive resistance through out history. And I believe violence begets violence.
When its at all possible for people to come together to bring their "cause" to the forefront, then passive resistance becomes a powerful reality & a means to ending conflict, albeit a timely means and process.
Self defense as others have said and in reaction to violence. It doesn't necessarily have to be directed at you. Say you witness someone beating their wife.. that to me warrants violence.
I usually say if it involves violence it can be handled with violence as violent people generally understand little else.
I suppose self defense is the obvious answer. However, that can also go too far and people have gone to prison for over-defending themselves. I think it's always important to evaluate your other options.
Though violence may be justified in certain cases, that doesn't mean there aren't necessarily some alternatives.
Violence is often the only viable solution. I know this assertion is unpopular among civilized people. Consider, though: Not all people are civilized.
Wild animals certainly are not civilized. When armed bank robbers hold hostages, the only way to save the hostages is to threaten the bank robbers with superior force. Yes, the situation might resolve without violence, but at least a show of force is almost always necessary.
When one is out in the wild, one should carry a loaded gun, just as protection against wild animals. There is no reasoning with a bobcat, for example.
I have to agree with the others. Self defense is about the only reasonable and legal way that violence or physical force is acceptable. Other than that, you become the aggressor and can suffer all kinds of legal issues, at least here in the U.S.Even the police can only use physical force in certain circumstance, and I believe alot of that relates to their own perceived safety.
I'm sure violence against people is perceived differently in different cultures. It's probably the belief that violence is okay for some people (say one spouse against another) that people think hitting is okay. There is even alot of problems if you try to physically discipline your child in public.
Some people do not believe that any physical discipline against a child is okay; and other people are more moderate (of course I'm not talking about beating a child but the occasional swat on the behind or something like that). Violence is often used by people in a perceived position of power. It can and has been used incorrectly.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
