Yes SharePod is free and will do exactly what you need. It is free and available here: getsharepod.com/download/ The only catch is that iTunes must be closed while SharePod is open and that there is currently read only support for the iPod touch 3. X software though there is full support for other firmware and it is being actively developed so write support won't be far behind.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
