The issue is sustained rate of fire. The bushmaster and a police special put out 6 rounds at the same speed. Then you have to manually remove the spent shells and reload the police special, while the bushmaster has 24 more rounds to fire uninterrupted.
Then it can change magazines quickly. The weapon used at the Aurora shooting had a 100 round drum magazine. Thank god it jammed.
