First of all, I believe that insults are demeaning to both parties; the one being insulted and the one who is doing it. Secondly, the grounds you mention are of generalizations. How could one (at least one who is educated and not a bigot) possibly do that?

It's going to happen, of course, and some will go for the lower option of race,religion, etc. Whether they mean it or it's just a gut reaction is the unknown. Some will lash out without thinking, and some will react in retaliation for a perceived slight towards them, and a small number have no problem mocking whatever they can find, be it race, religion, weight, etc. Of course there is no real justification for it, but seeing as we are dealing with a wide variety of humans with a wide variety of emotional makeups and intellectual abilities it's going to happen. We've come a long way, but people are people.
