Is there any truth to this whole hypoallergenic dogs thing?

There are many breeds that are touted to be "hypo-allergenic. " The truth is that there are indeed breeds of dog that don't seem to "set off" a person's allergies. Your fiance's allergy may be mild or severe.

I wouldn't suggest she go to a dog show to do this, but if you really want a dog then this is worth a try. I used to work for a Vet so I know this advice. 1) Start with your fiance's Doctor.

Find out if her allergy is mild or severe. There are folks whose allergies are only set off by certain breeds, by certain dog or flea shampoos (not the animal itself). If her allergy is mild, then there may be breeds that don't set her symptoms off.

Her allergy may be so severe though, that no breed on earth would not cause her allergies to go haywire, even a Peruvian Inca Orchid- a rare nearly hairless dog. 2) Armed with the information from her Doctor, (who may be able to suggest a breed or two), call AKC registered breeders in the area. Although I generally steer people to shelters, in her case a mix may not be the best idea.

Explain that you are looking at different breeds, and need to arange a meeting between her and one of the dogs- to see what happens. Most breeders want a sale, so they'll be happy to help. (Even if they aren't able to sell you a dog, you could recommend them to friends).

They'll be happy to have the dog bathed and by itself for the meeting. If everything goes well, perhaps an interm sale could be arranged. By that, if you get the dog home and no allergy symptoms appear, then everything's set.

If unfortunately, they are set off, you can return the dog without penalties. 3) If you aren't sure, but have learned what breeds won't set her allergies off, check out rescue organizations. There are plenty of pedigreed dogs and cats begging for good homes.4) If nothing works, but find a breed or two that only set her allergies off somewhat, she and you could make a decision on allergy medication or shots.

That would be entirely up to her. I wish you both the best.

Yes, there is truth to hypoallergenic dogs, in fact the first thing President Obama required for their dog is a hypoallergenic pet. "The bichon frise, Italian greyhound, standard and miniature poodles, Portuguese water dog and West ghland terrier are all examples of hypoallergenic dogs.
