Is there any way to dye my hair without it getting extremly tangled when wet?

I've always been told to condition my hair, but that doesn't seem to work. I have the darkest brown hair you can get before black hair. I once put blonde highlights in it, and they were hell to untangle when they got wet.

I'm not looking to go blonde, but a slightly lighter brown, or a dark red. I've been told that, even then, my hair will tangle furiously; however, I had gotten deep red highlights with no problems. What's the best route to take in this situation?
