Maybe that's why you didn't ask it... I never thought that made much sense. I had a teacher that would always say there's no such thing as a stupid question, but would then ridicule students when they asked a question he didn't deem as "intelligent! " He had a way of making them feel dumb without having to downplay them with his words.
More so he would question them to allow them to see how dumb they were, and would also show it in his tone of voice. What do you think of the two above sayings? Asked by dwdrums 49 months ago Similar questions: thing stupid question Education & Reference.
As a retired teacher.... Yes, some questions are honestly stupid, I’m afraid. They came in two categories in my classes: 1. A question asking for information we had just been discussing which the student had been too busy with something else to listen to.2.
A question which had absolutely nothing to do with the subject at hand. (such as the one I got in an algebra class one day, " teach, what causes zits? ") What I DID tell my students in my various classes through the years was that if they had a question about what was being talked about, PLEASE ask it.
Because if they had the question, that meant others had it, too, and SOMEONE needed to be brave enough to raise their hand and ask it! In that case there truly were no stupid questions and I was very careful to treat each question with respect. It was the nonsensical questions and those which indicated the student was totally clueless about what we had JUST been talking about which used to make me a little irritated... On the other hand, I loved the questions from students that were brave enough to let me know I hadn’t explained clearly or who showed they had been thinking about the point of discussion and had questions that had occurred to them.
They made teaching fun and challenging intellectually. What you may have run into, dwdrums2032, is one of the (I'm afraid) many teachers who do not like to be questioned except by those who agree with them. Hang in there.
There are other teachers out there! .
It is said that "there are no stupid questions, only stupid people". I'm guessing that this statement came from......... ....a 'smart person'. Well that's just baloney.
How are we supposed to gain knowledge to something we don't know if we don't understand? We teach our children to speak up and ask questions because that is the only way we will learn, then we grow up and criticize people for not having the 'right knowledge'. There appears to be a culture emerging where 'stupid questions' are scoffed at.
Children can be excused for asking all sorts of questions because they are still learning. But aren't we as adults learning as well? Especially when it involves things we know little about?
We cannot be expected to know everything. But there are those whose expectations of others runs very high e. G professionals observing a 'trainee'.
These 'observers' are biased when errors are introduced into a situation for which they expect to find the 'right' behaviour. Such 'observer bias' creates expectations in the observer when they overemphasize behaviours they expect to find; while disregarding behaviour that was not expected. When we find ourselves in such circumstances, we learn to feel shame for our 'stupidity' when we are well within our rights to inquire about things we know little about or are still learning.
Such expectations allow us to feel 'stupid' when we're not. Www.oriellynet. Don't let one person's contradictory behavior sway your opionions... I truly believe that the only stupid questions are the ones that aren't asked. I've watched many co-workers over the years fail to ask that all-important question because they thought they knew exactly what the boss wanted, either because it seemed obvious or because it had always been done that way before. Then it turns out that there was a change in the company policy, the law, or the boss's desires, and that task was done wrong...leading the boss to berate the worker.
From your description it sounds to me that that particular teacher was either on his own little power trip, needing to belittle his students in order to feel good about himself, or he was in the midst of a career crisis and needed to stop teaching. I once had a teacher like that. Every time we would start a new chapter of the textbook, and learn something new, he would get frustrated when we would ask him questions about the material.
One day he yelled at all of us, saying that we had covered this material over and over and over again so he couldn't see why it was so difficult. One of the kids pointed out that HE might have covered that chapter over and over and over again, but it was brand-new to us. The kid who brought it up got detention for "talking back," but I noticed the teacher quit doing that to us as much and retired shortly after..
The problem is we don't like looking stupid Okay for the first part of the question,Yes there is such a thing as a stupid question. I know because I have asked them. Examples are..Do Cadillacs come with delay wipers..duh its a Cadillac.
What day is it? Honey would you like me to make you something to eat? ,etc Now to the second part of your question "the only stupid question is the one you don't ask?"
This I agree with totally. I have many, many times in my life not asked a question for fear of looking stupid. By not looking stupid I caused myself to remain ignorant.

I feel there are stupid questions. They include: 1. A question asked out of laziness.
I'll ask, let someone else do my work. 2. Any question whose answer has already been clearly given, but you were too busy texting someone to listen.3.
Any question that should be able to be answered by someone in your position/skill level by definition. Example: You are a rocket scientist, and when someone mentions Newton's law, you ask; "Who's Newton"?4. Almost any question asked by a politician..
" "Ok, this may be a stupid question, but..." "When I was a kid, I was told "if you ask a stupid question, you'll get a stupid answer. " True?" "Is there really no such thing as a stupid question? " "The stupid question game.
" "Do you wish, sometimes in Askville, that there was a way to vote: "This is a stupid question"?" "Do you think the 5 answers per question thing is stupid?
Try to forward any question to me and see how you do,you will have to admit STUPID.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
