Tai chi is a noncombative martial art that trains its practitioners in slow, gentle, and continuous movements. Unlike the static stretching poses of yoga, the emphasis of tai chi is on fluid, dynamic joint motion. Where yoga may be more appropriate for people with muscular neck and back pain, tai chi is best suited for people with degenerative disc- or joint-induced pain.
If vigorous exercise is inappropriate, or you don't enjoy taking classes at a gym, then individual or home yoga and tai chi instruction are excellent alternatives.
