Shes biased, probably never met a holocaust survivor, and doesn't understand the magnitude of the destruction and persecution of the jewish community in Europe, who had been living there for hundreds od yrs. To emphasize, picture the entire america turning against the jewish population. All the jews have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide ( they didn't have isreal) I was imagining it today, imaging how my life would turn upside down if we wud have a holocaust here.
Bec the position of jews in berlin was similiar to jews in new york, they were very assimilatd, integrated. So you think it cud never happen again? Thats the traumatizing aspect of the holocaust, that you can explain to your aunt.
Its the fact that it happened, that such a thing COULD happen. That trauma inside a jews soul is something that doesn't go away after sixty yrs. The fact that such a thig cud happen, that friendly neighbors turned into killers and persecuters, left a trauma, who says my friendly neighbors wudnt do that to me in the future?
How do I trust the world knowing that such evil reared up against my grandparents? How do it that it wudnt happen again? Not that im complaining, Id rather die as a Jew than live as not being a Jew.
But the trauma is there. Like in marriage, once your spouse hits u, you know that he has that in him to do that, so you can never fully trust that he wudnt do it again, even if he tries, bec you now realize that he has the capabililty to raech such a point of anger to do it in the first place.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
