As akanga1 replied, compression stockings would always be the first course of action. From a surgical standpoint they can be either stripped or removed but those procedures require there to be an underlying medical need.
Compression (Pressure) stockings. They may be uncomfortable in hot weather, and may crash with your wardrobe, but they are the most effective remedial measure. They work by improving circulation in your legs bearing in mind that varicose veins are essentially a manifestation of poor circulation due to incompetent valves in the leg veins.
If the development is unexpected it may be worthwhile to see your doctor to see if there is an underlying cause.
There are a variety of causes for varicose veins and many treatments both mechanical and nutritional. I think the major cause is Hereditary; poor circulation and standing for hours on hard surfaces can also contribute to them. A mechanical fix that is suppose to be good, is progressive compression hose.
However, I personally don't like them , if the tops fit just below the knee they have a tendency to bind and cut off the circulation, which then is counter-effective. My belief being, that can damage the valves in the leg veins that prevents the blood from flowing back down. The destruction of those valves is the major cause of the appearance of varicose veins.
Since I am in the Nutritional business, I prefer good nutrition.... Products which nourish and strenghthen the veins, stimulate the circulatory system and keep your cholesterol level in check. Other factors, overweight, constipation and lack of exercise can be causal. The favorable exercise recommendation is walking an hour a day.
There are an abundance of Nutritionals that are recommended; the list is to long to include herein!
