Java Spring eager fetch Hibernate subclass fails?

You've identified the problem correctly I think. Remember that when fetching your Game, Hibernate needs to decide what to load eagerly using a join. At this point, it knows that it will need everything in a GamePhase.

You didn't ask it to fetch a subclass of GamePhase so normally it won't. So the join getting everything for Game will usually never include anything from Series.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
