The Bible calls Jesus the only-begotten Son of God several times, particularly in the first chapter of the Gospel According to St. John (John was one of Jesus' disciples.) Talking about this turns quickly to the topic of the Holy Trinity -- One God in three divine persons. The Father is the source, the Word is eternally begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit proceeds eternally from the Father. The Word of God became incarnate, uniquely, one-time-only in Jesus Christ.
The terms Word of God and Son of God thus became synonymous, and Jesus is written about as being the only-begotten Son. And he is the unique Son of God in these two ways -- the eternally begotten unique Son and Word; and the divine and unique incarnation as Jesus Christ. Jesus is at once the eternal only-begotten, and the earthly only-begotten Son of God.
