Julie's Wills & Estate Planning Blog Estate Tax Repeal: Where Do the 2008 Presidential Candidates Stand?

Tuesday February 26, 2008 In this year of a presidential election, I am curious about what the remaining candidates think about the federal estate tax as it is currently scheduled to be repealed in 2010. While in 2008 estates valued at $2,000,000 or less are exempt from the federal estate tax, a recent internet search of the On the Issues website revealed that Mrs. Clinton is against full repeal and instead favors a $3,500,000 exemption which equates to a $7,000,000 exemption for married couples who have done proper estate planning. In fact, the exemption is currently scheduled to increase to $3,500,000 in 2009, so it seems that Mrs. Clinton would push to make the 2009 exemption permanent.
