Justice Souter is retiring from the Supreme Court. How does this affect the balance of the Court? CNN is reporting this right now.

I would post a link, but the moronic filter here will not allow me to do so. Is Souter seen as a moderate? Assuming Obama chooses a moderate or even "liberal" justice, does this change the balance of the Court?

Not at all. The hopeful expectation was that "conservative" G. W.

Bush would be appointing more replacements than he did in those eight years, but there it is. Souter is "liberal. " Obviously, President Obama will appoint someone consistent with his own Democrat/liberal sensibilities, and the result will be a liberal for liberal, merely swapping out the names.

No change.

That would be a pleasant change. Thank you Souter.

2 Interesting. Not entirely unexpected; he's never really enjoyed the job. I think everybody expected Ginsburg's cancer to make her retire first.

It doesn't dramatically shift the balance of the court, since Souter is a liberal justice (despite having been nominated by Bush 41). Obama will probably nominate somebody young, as a balance for the fact that Bush 43 nominated fairly young justices. Obama has a while to replace him, and assuming that he waits for Franken, the Democrats can break a filibuster.

Presumably the GOP press releases are already being drawn up, using the expressions "socialist", "most liberal", and "legislate from the bench", waiting to have a name filled in.

3 Souter began as an appointee of the original President Bush, and began his tenure as a conservative. Since then, though, he has tended to side with the more liberal justices--much to the consternation of the conservatives. Since Obama is likely to appoint a liberal justice, the balance of the court should remain about the same.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
